Cello Master Class with János Starker
This live recording of Hungarian-American cello virtuoso János Starker was made on December 8th, 1971 at WBAI’s ‘church’ studio in New York City as part of the Free Music Store series. Starker, one of the most recorded, technically-proficient, and innovative cellists of the 20th Century, leads a Master Class complete with a discussion about the cello (including literature, technique, and style), studio audience participation in the warm-up exercises, and performances of Bach, Handel, and Kodály by Starker and pianist and close friend György Sebök.
Trumpeter Donald Byrd
Kick back to the mid-1980’s for an informal and educational conversation about the life and career of one of the most prolific trumpet players of our time, Donaldson Toussaint L’Ouverture Byrd II, known to the music world as Donald Byrd. While Byrd certainly made his mark playing with many of the 1950’s jazz legends, what truly set him apart were the innovative soul and funk sounds he incorporated into his work during the 1970’s.
