FTV 148 St. Patrick’s Day: The Chieftains

This week on From the Vault, we present a recently restored and digitized program — A Piper Piping Away: An Interview with Paddy Maloney. Mr. Maloney is founder and leader of the traditional Irish music group The Chieftains, who were instrumental in popularizing traditional Irish music that was in danger of being lost forever. The Chieftains have won six Grammy Awards, and over the years have performed with an all-star list of musicians, including Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, Sting, Rosanne Cash, Art Garfunkel, Mark Knopfler, and The Grateful Dead. This recording was restored courtesy of funding from Ginna Allison through the Pacifica Radio Archives Adopt-a-Tape Program. Ms. Allison, who was formerly part of a championship national Irish/Celtic music dance group, comments on her experience with Irish music in the and how it led to the adoption of this particular program, which was originally produced 1979 by Padraigin McGillicuddy and Michael Huston.
From the Vault is presented as part of the Pacifica Radio Archives Preservation and Access Project.
