FTV 141 The Village Gate

From the Vault celebrates newly ‘discovered’ recordings of live performances at the legendary Village Gate nightclub in Greenwich Village, New York City. Over the years, the Village Gate’s storied stage saw the likes of artists John Coltrane, Billie Holiday, Coleman Hawkins, Thelonious Monk, Nina Simone, and Duke Ellington, among others. Just one year after the club’s doors opened in 1958, Pacifica station WBAI went on the air; the Village Gate’s owner, Art D’Lugoff, settled into a natural partnership with WBAI, and generously donated the club time and time again for the station’s use during fundraisers.
Several of these WBAI-produced sessions were recorded and submitted to the Pacifica Radio Archives, which dutifully stored these musical gems in obscurity, until the recent Preservation and Access project brought them once again to the surface. This episode of From the Vault features live Village Gate performances of Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, and McCoy Tyner from 1977, and Amani and Amiri Baraka from 1984.
From the Vault is presented as part of the Pacifica Radio Archives Preservation and Access Project.
