FTV 019 Henry Miller

Posted in Update on August 31st, 2006

“The day I graduated from high scool I was asked what I wanted to be and I said a clown… I was saying a great truth because I think there is a lot of the clown in me… to laugh at yourself is a great thing.”
~Henry Miller (1891-1980)

Henry Miller is best known for his novels Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn, as well his controversial reputation for writing about sexual experiences in explicit detail. But perhaps few would ever consider this great American author’s creativity to be rooted in humor… recently remastered recordings from deep within our vault may change that perception.

Here at Pacifica Radio Archives, we are fortunate to have numerous documentaries on Henry Miller, each with extensive interviews with and recordings of Miller speaking with friends and reading from his work. What emerges from this historic audio is a surprising portrait of an incredibly funny man living in the company great friends, abound with tales of adventure and wild drunken nights. In the episode of From the Vault, we’ll get to Henry Miller on a very personal level through intimate conversations with the author himself.

In the second half of From the Vault, we turn to an interview with Henry Miller conducted in 1956 by Ben Grauer. The interview covers everything from Miller’s happiest memories to why he admired French prostitutes so much. Throughout the interview, we’ll also hear excerpts from a variety of Miller’s works. This is Henry Miller as true as can be!

FTV 018 Emma Goldman

Posted in Update on August 11th, 2006

“Every daring attempt to make a great change in existing conditions, every lofty vision of new possibilities for the human race, has been labeled Utopian. “
~Emma Goldman (1869-1940)

On this episode of From the Vault, we celebrate the complex and sometimes stormy life of America’s best-known anarchist, Emma Goldman. The foundation for our study will be a wonderful documentary produced by Trish Valva in 1991 for Pacifica Radio. Emma Goldman: The Courage to Struggle, is a fascinating look at the feminist who advocated free speech, birth control, and women’s equality in the first half of the 20th century. We’ll hear interviews with Dr. Candace Falk, editor of the Emma Goldman Papers, Mollie Ackerman, Goldman’s personal secretary, and Ora Robbins, whose family provided a home while Robbins was a teenager.

The second half of this week’s episode will focus on an interview with Dr. Candace Falk, the director of the Emma Goldman Papers Project and author of the book Love, Anarchy, and Emma Goldman. The interview, conducted in 1985, deals with the personal life of Emma Goldman– her loves, her relationships– and how these loved ones were affected by her activism and how her activism was affected by her loves.

FTV 017 The 1982 Israel / Lebanon War

Posted in Update on August 3rd, 2006

“I think its not unlikely that Israel will invade Lebanon soon. They’ve been trying to provoke a PLO action that would lead to invasion for months and sooner or later they’ll do it. And that could lead to a more general regional war.”
~Noam Chomsky, speaking to KPFA’s Philip Maldari in April 1982, just days after an Israeli military officer was killed by a landmine in the buffer zone in Southern Lebanon. Over the following months, Israel used the officer’s death to justify a full-scale bombing and occupation of Lebanon in attempt to oust the Palestinian Liberation Organization from Lebanese soil.

The summer of 2006 will long be compared to the spring of 1982 in the troubled lands of the Middle East. Just as the death of of an Israeli soldier sparked a major bombardment and subsequent invasion of Lebanon in 1982, the headlines these days tell an eerily similar story. Once again, the Middle East teeters on the brink of full-blown war, and Pacifica Network’s listener-sponsored reporting on the region shines today as it did in 1982.

On this episode of From the Vault, we remember the harsh lessons of the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon through news reports filed by Pacifica reporters during the invasion and from interviews and documentaries on the conflict. Bear in mind it is nearly impossible to give a complete and definitive account of all that led up to the war and the events that followed in one half-hour program, but using the extensive collection here in the Archive, we present Pacifica’s perspective.

In the second half of this week’s episode, we present perspective surrounding the hard facts of Pacifica’s news reports with archival commentaries by Middle East Journalist Robert Fisk, Middle East scholar Edward Said, MIT Professor Noam Chomsky, and University of San Francisco Professor Stephen Zunes.
