This week on From the Vault, we look at Bertolt Brecht in Germany, in America, at the height of his career, and at the lowest point of his life. Using sounds from nearly 70 hours of programs on Brecht in the Pacifica Radio Archives, we hear Bertolt Brecht From the Vault: Remixed.

Eric Bentley is unanimously considered the premiere expert on Brecht in the world. On From the Vault: Remembered, Bentley shares some of his personal insight into the man, as well his personal recollections from a long and productive friendship.

FTV 002 – The 1979 March On Washington for Gay & Lesbian Rights

Posted in Update on April 17th, 2006

For the week of April 21, 2006.

“Rights are not won on paper. They are won only by those who make their voices heard.” – Harvey Milk

Across the United States recently, millions have been marching for their rights. This is a tradition as old as this country. And the movements build in momentum to bring about change. In 1979, gays and lesbians came from all 50 states to march in the nation’s capital. It was the first large scale march of it’s kind. The idea first came to Harvey Milk as a way to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Stonewall. Twenty-seven years later, Milk and many others are no longer with us, but the struggle continues for gay marriage and equality under the law. This week, we look back at the 1979 March On Washington for Gay & Lesbian Rights.

During FTV: Remembered, Ray Hill – the lead organizer of the 1979 march – selects one program out of the entire Pacifica Radio Archives’ Vault to play raw, and explains why that one program means so much to him.

FTV 001 – Pacifica’s 57th Anniversary

Posted in Update on April 11th, 2006

On this series premiere of From the Vault, we’re celebrating the 57th anniversary of the legendary community radio network Lewis Hill founded in 1949. But instead of a typical collage of all the great clips from Pacifica’s past, we’re looking specifically at the two people who most defined the network. The first, of course, is Lewis Hill: pacifist, conscientious objector, and Pacifica’s original visionary. The second is Elsa Knight Thompson: one of the first women radio broadcasters, an award-winning journalist, and famed interviewer. These two were the spirit of Pacifica for the Network’s first 20 years. And their spirits still guide Pacifica and all listener-sponsored radio. They shared a common belief – a fundamental belief – that all opinions were entitled to an outlet, that everyone was entitled to a voice. This week, we hear theirs.

The second half of this show introduces David Moore, Lewis Hill’s son. David Moore selected one program out of the entire Pacifica Radio Archives’ vault to play raw and unedited, and we’ll hear his comments on why this particular recording is so important to him.
